scholar:Issue 1-PAPIE

scholar的第一期，我们将题目定为了“papie”，来源于法语中“papier（纸）”一词。

选择这个主题的原因有很多，而最主要是原因，还是源自于我们的一个共识，就是借由这次机会，做一本能实实在在拿在手上的“纸本”。“纸本”对于我们这一代人来说是十分特殊的东西。例如小时候会记录下每天日常的笔记；或是集齐了满满喜欢的人物贴纸与手抄信息的简单手册，这一切都脱离不开纸。小到与设计这份职业相关的排版与印刷，大到书店与书籍设计的教育，我们究竟在被什么所吸引呢？或是从自身出发，或是收集素材，或是采访一些围绕着书在进行工作的人，我们制作了我们的第一本“纸本书”。

无论是“学习小组”这样的形式，还是“制作一本有意义的纸本”对我们来说都是陌生而刺激的挑战。这次团队5个人里面有3个同时在准备毕设的毕业生，一边做毕设一边做杂志的恐怖，到现在都还难以忘记。项目开始于2020年的11月，花了2个月确立主题，又花了2个月发出邀请、采访，再花了2个月写文章校对，最终下厂印刷已经是2021年7月份了，书籍还没印刷，3个成员毕业了，有一个还回国做了项目经理。最开始是最艰难的事，没有经验导致许多事情停留于发散但无法落地的尴尬阶段，从一开始做二手书店主题，到后来变成一本magazine，又回归到各自想做的主题。最终让大家都赞同的模式就是将其想象成一个有主题的“毕设”，主题大家确定了后，怎么去做全凭个人。在这样的反复折腾中，学习小组的形式被确定了下来，每周末成员聚在一起相互发表进度，宛如另一个毕设的现场。

此次比起一个给出答案的人，我们更像是一群寻找答案的人，一群收集整理信息的人。在这里特别感谢最终接受我们采访的书籍设计师的祖父江慎与田中义久，MeMe Design School的校长中垣信夫，Booktruck的店主三田修平，还有在独立出版坚持发光发热的周安迪、默私，和我们的朋友书籍设计师李政柯。还有帮助我们采访的Richor与太田宙，本次的书籍设计师椅子，还有本次学习小组的成员cherry、小飞和大头。期待我们下期再见。

For the first issue of "scholar", we have titled it "papie", which comes from the French word "papier".

There are many reasons for choosing this theme, while the main reason is that we agreed to take this opportunity to make a "paperback" that we can actually hold in our hands. The "paperback" is a very special thing for our generation such as the notes to record daily life in childhood, or a collection of stickers full of favorite characters and a simple manual filled with handwritten information, all of which are inseparable from paper. From small things like layout and printing related to the profession of design, to large things like bookstores and book design education, what are we really attracted to? We created our first "paper book" either by ourselves, or by collecting materials, or by interviewing people who are working around books.Both the format of "study group" and "production of a meaningful paper book" were unfamiliar and exciting challenges for us. There were three graduates in the team of five people who were simultaneously preparing for their graduation projects. It is still unforgettable with the horror of making a magazine while working on graduation projects. This project started in November 2020, it took two months to determine the theme, another two months to send out invitations and conduct interviews, and another two months to write and proofread articles. It was July 2021 when the books were finally printed, before which three members graduated and one of them returned to China, working as a project manager.

The very beginning was the toughest part because of lack of experience, which led to many things stuck in the awkward stage of being diffuse but unable to get off the ground. From the beginning we decided the theme of second-hand bookstores, to later became a magazine, then back to that each member had their own wanted themes. The final model that everyone agreed on was to imagine it as a "graduation project" with a theme, and once the theme was decided, it was up to the individual to do it. The format of study group was finally established in this iterative process. Every weekend, members got together to present their progress to each other, just like the same scene of another graduation design.

This time, we are more like a group of people looking for answers, a group of people who collect and organize information, than a person who gives answers. We would like to give special thanks to our final interviewees Shin Sobue and Yoshihisa Tanaka, the principal of MeMe Design School Nobuo Nakagaki, the owner of BOOK TRUCK Shuhei Mita, our friends Andy Zhou and Mosi who keep making contributions in independent publishing, and book designer Zhengke Li. We would also like to thank Richor and Sora Ota who helped us with the interview, the book designer of this time Yizi, and the members of this study group, Cherry, Xiaofei and Datou.
